This technology, which has only hit the mainstream in the last five years or so, has actually been around for more than thirty years now. Originally employed solely for the production of prototype components, mainly in the automotive sector, 3D printing technologies have now infiltrated the whole of global manufacturing.

Instead of removing material from a stock blank, otherwise known as subtractive manufacturing a 3D object is built up by stacking thin layers of material on top of each other, layer by layer, until a close approximation of the desired part is achieved which is called additive manufacturing.
